A route video for your event

At a briefing, most riders take in the route from a line on a map and a list of distances. A video of the course does it better: the climbs coming up, where the feed stops are, how far apart they are, and what the finish looks like. ToonRoute makes one from the event's GPX or FIT file, with each stop and checkpoint on a signpost by the road.

Below is an example for an event we made up, the Pyrenees Spring Sportive: 186 km from Pau to Gavarnie over the Col d'Aspin and the Col du Tourmalet, with four feed stops and two checkpoints. It is cut down to the stops to show them; a video from the app is the whole ride, at the length you choose.

What riders see

The world is built from the real terrain and map along the route, so the climbs look like climbs and the towns are where they should be. The character rides the course and slows down for each sign, then stops for a few seconds while a card comes up with the stop's name and how far into the route it is: Feed 2 - Capvern-les-Bains, km 81.

Every climb gets a banner with its length, average gradient and height gained, and known climbs are named. The elevation chart along the bottom has a dot for every stop, so riders can see that a feed comes before the big climb rather than after it. Turn on the route map and a small outline of the whole course sits in the corner, drawn out as the ride goes. The video ends on a card with the distance, the climbing and the time.

Getting the checkpoints in

If your route file has them, there is nothing to do. Waypoints in a GPX file come in as signposts, named as they are in the file. A FIT course's points come in the same way, except the turn directions. Name them the way you would on the route card, such as Feed 1 - Lourdes or Checkpoint 2 - Col du Tourmalet, as the name is what goes on screen.

If they are not in the file, add them in the app:

  1. Play the preview and pause it where the character is at the stop. Drag along the elevation chart to get there faster.
  2. Open Track and press Add sign post. A sign goes up where the character is.
  3. Name it in Manage sign posts. The list has every sign with its distance. Change the words, pick a type, and set a colour: one for feeds, another for checkpoints, so riders can tell them apart at a glance.

Signs you do not want, such as a waypoint for a car park, can be taken out from the same list.

Setting it up for a projector

On the night

Download the video from the page when it is made (or from the emailed link, if you asked for one) before the evening, and play it from the laptop that is plugged into the projector, full screen, in any video player. Do not rely on the venue's wifi for the link.

To share it with riders afterwards, put the MP4 on your event page or a video site, or attach it to the joining instructions. The download link stops working an hour after you download the video, or after seven days, so it is not one to pass on.

Tips

Questions

Our GPX has no waypoints. Can we still show the stops?

Yes. Add each one by hand: pause the preview where the character is at the spot and press Add sign post in Track, then name it in Manage sign posts.

How long will the video be?

On Auto, about 1.6 seconds for each kilometre of route, kept between one and six minutes, plus the time at each stop. The character also slows into each stop and over the big climbs, so the 186 km example with eight signs comes out at nearly eight minutes in full. Pick a set length in Video if you want it shorter.

Can riders watch it at home afterwards?

Yes, if you put it somewhere they can find it. The video comes as an MP4: put it on your event page or a video site, or send it round with the joining instructions. The download link is only kept for seven days, so do not send riders that.

Can we show two distances?

Make one video for each route. Save the first as a project, or download its settings, and the second looks the same.

Is it free?

During the beta, yes: one at a time and up to six a day, at any size. After the beta a video will cost a small amount. The pricing page has the details.
