Fuel Prices & Opening Times Across Europe

Most walkers and cyclists won't need to fill up with petrol, but don't overlook petrol stations as a stop on your route. They're often the most reliable option for grabbing a drink, a snack, or using the facilities - especially in rural areas where smaller shops may have limited or unpredictable hours.

PitStopper now shows live fuel prices and opening hours for petrol stations across five countries: the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy. The data appears automatically in the POI popup when you click on a fuel station marker along your route.

Why Petrol Stations?

If you've ever arrived at a village shop to find it closed at 3pm on a Wednesday, you'll appreciate this. Petrol stations tend to open earlier, close later, and keep more consistent hours than independent shops. Many are open seven days a week, and some operate around the clock.

That makes them a dependable option when you need to refuel yourself rather than a vehicle - whether you're cycling through the Yorkshire Dales, hiking the GR20 in Corsica, or touring through the Black Forest.

Supported Countries

PitStopper automatically detects which country each fuel station is in based on its coordinates. UK stations show prices in pence, while stations in France, Germany, Spain and Italy show prices in euros. Each country uses its own data source and cache, so results stay accurate and don't interfere with each other.

United Kingdom

UK fuel price data comes from the government's open fuel pricing initiative. Prices are sourced directly from the retailers, refreshed hourly on our server, and displayed in pence per litre.

  • Unleaded (E10)
  • Super Unleaded (E5)
  • Diesel
  • Premium Diesel
  • Diesel (B10)
  • HVO

UK stations also show amenities like toilets, car wash, water, AdBlue, and LPG availability.

France

French fuel prices come from the government's prix-carburants.gouv.fr open data feed. Prices are displayed in euros per litre.

  • Gazole (Diesel)
  • SP95
  • E10
  • SP98
  • E85 (Ethanol)
  • GPLc (LPG)

French stations have particularly rich amenity data - things like toilets, shops, air pumps, car washes, 24/7 card payment terminals, EV charging, motorhome areas, and more. All amenity names are automatically translated into English.

Germany

German fuel prices come from the Tankerkoenig open data project, which sources real-time pricing from Germany's Market Transparency Unit for Fuels (MTS-K). Prices are displayed in euros per litre.

  • Super E10
  • Super E5
  • Diesel

German price data is published under a CC BY 4.0 licence. Stations show opening hours alongside prices, so you can check whether a stop will be open when you arrive.

Spain

Spanish fuel prices come from geoportalgasolineras.es, Spain's official fuel station portal. Prices are displayed in euros per litre.

Spain has a dense network of fuel stations, including many along the autopista motorway network. This makes them a reliable option for cyclists touring the Camino de Santiago or along the Mediterranean coast.

Italy

Italian fuel prices come from MIMIT Open Data, published by Italy's Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy. Prices are displayed in euros per litre.

Italy's autostrada service stations are well-known rest stops, and even off the motorway network you'll find fuel stations in most towns. Handy if you're cycling through Tuscany or hiking in the Dolomites and need a reliable place to grab water and snacks.

Opening Hours

All five countries include opening hours in the station popup. You'll see the full weekly schedule - which days the station is open, what time it opens and closes, and whether it's currently open or closed right now.

This is particularly useful when planning a route in advance. If you're aiming to reach a particular station by a certain time, you can check the timetable before you set off rather than arriving to find it shut.

Station Amenities

UK and French stations show what facilities are available - things like toilets, car wash, water, EV charging, and shop. For cyclists and walkers, knowing there's water or a toilet available can be just as useful as knowing the opening hours.

German, Spanish, and Italian stations currently show prices and hours but don't include amenity data, as their respective data sources don't provide this information.

How It Works

  1. Search for Petrol Stations as a POI category along your route (or in location mode)
  2. PitStopper fetches fuel data in the background after your search completes - no extra steps needed
  3. Click any fuel station marker to see its prices, hours, and amenities in the popup

The system detects each station's country from its coordinates and queries the right data source automatically. Results are cached in your browser for 30 minutes to keep things fast and avoid unnecessary API calls.

Tip: Planning a cross-border tour? PitStopper handles country transitions seamlessly. A route from London to Paris to Berlin, or from Barcelona to Rome, will show each station's prices in the correct currency with data from the appropriate national source.

Dedicated Fuel Finder Tool

If you're specifically looking for fuel stations along a route, we've also built a dedicated standalone tool at skeffling.net/gpx-fuel. Upload a GPX or KML route file and it will show you every fuel station along the way with prices and opening times. It's a lighter, focused alternative if fuel is all you're after.

Happy planning!
