Why We Added FIT Support
We were recently given three route files for the Equinox Omniloop event happening on March 21, 2026 in the Cotswolds, UK. All three came from Ride with GPS and were in .fit format. We wanted to use PitStopper to plan for this event - find water stops, cafes, and resupply points along each loop - but we couldn't load the files. So we built FIT support.
It turned out to be a worthwhile addition. FIT is the native file format for Garmin devices, and plenty of route planning platforms export it. If you've ever downloaded a course from Ride with GPS, Garmin Connect, or Wahoo and found yourself with a .fit file instead of a .gpx, PitStopper now handles that seamlessly.
About the Equinox Omniloop
The Equinox Omniloop is part of the Solstice Series - a unique 24-hour cycling event based at Cotswold Lakes near South Cerney. Rather than competing on distance, it's a 3D time trial where riders choose between three loops of increasing difficulty, earning more points for tackling harder routes.
- Short Loop - Flat and fast, ideal for building up points early or recovering between harder efforts
- Medium Loop - Undulating terrain with strategic climbing and more points per lap
- Long Loop - Hilly and demanding, offering the highest points but the toughest challenge
The strategy is yours: stick to the short loop for consistency, push yourself on the long loop for maximum points, or mix and match depending on how you're feeling. Entry is £85 solo or £120 as a pair, and self-sufficiency is required - you'll need to carry a phone, hi-vis harness, foil blanket, and lights.
With a 4.9/5 star rating from previous riders, it's clearly a well-organised event. We're looking forward to using PitStopper to plan our fuel stops, water refill points, and rest locations across each of the three loops. For a 24-hour event in the English countryside in March, knowing where to find an open shop or a warm cafe could make all the difference.
What's New
FIT file support is now fully built into PitStopper. Here's what you get:
Import FIT Files - Load .fit course files from Ride with GPS, Garmin Connect, Wahoo, Hammerhead, or any platform that exports FIT format. Just upload and go.
Multi-Route Support - Add multiple FIT files, or mix FIT and GPX, to compare routes or plan multi-day trips. All your routes load into the same project.
Waypoint Preservation - FIT files with CoursePoint waypoints are imported and displayed on the map, just like GPX waypoints. Nothing gets lost.
FIT Export - Export your enhanced route back to FIT format with all your discovered POIs included as CoursePoints, ready to load onto your Garmin device.
Lossless Round-Trip - Import a FIT file, add POIs, and export back to FIT. The original course data is preserved throughout - no data loss, no degradation.
How to Use It
Using FIT files in PitStopper is straightforward:
- Click "Upload GPX, FIT or Project File" on the landing page, or just drag and drop a .fit file onto the page
- PitStopper automatically detects the file type and loads the route onto the map
- Search for POIs along your route as normal - fuel stops, cafes, water fountains, bike shops, whatever you need
- Export as FIT (or GPX) from the header menu when you're done planning
Everything works exactly the same whether you loaded a GPX or FIT file. The POI search, elevation profile, distance markers, favourites, bulk editor - all of it works identically regardless of the source format.
Tip: If you have a FIT file and a GPX file for the same event (like we did with the Omniloop), you can load them all into the same project using the "Add Another Route" option in the Routes menu.
Try It Out
If you have FIT files from Ride with GPS, Garmin Connect, Wahoo, Hammerhead, or anywhere else, give PitStopper a try. Upload your course and discover the fuel stations, convenience stores, pubs, and points of interest along your route.
And if you're doing the Equinox Omniloop on March 21st - see you in the Cotswolds!
