What is PitStopper?
PitStopper.net is a route enhancement tool designed for adventurers, cyclists, hikers, and travelers who need to discover points of interest along their routes.
We leverage OpenStreetMap data to provide comprehensive POI coverage worldwide. PitStopper.net is designed so that your browser makes connections directly to OpenStreetMap servers - none of your route data ever touches our servers.
About me
Hi, I'm Andrew
I'm a cyclist based in the UK, and I build PitStopper in my spare time.
It started as a simple way to find water taps in Madeira - there are loads of them dotted all over the island, and I wanted an easy way to spot the next one along my route. PitStopper grew from there, and it keeps growing as new ideas come along for more features.
I mostly ride my road bike, but I've also got a mountain bike and a BMX - so PitStopper is built for whatever you happen to be riding (or walking, or running).
I'm also a (very small) contributor to OpenStreetMap - adding missing POIs as I spot them on my own rides, the same data PitStopper relies on to find yours.

How It Works
Client-Side Processing
When you upload a GPX file, it's parsed and processed entirely in your web browser using JavaScript. Your browser then queries third-party APIs directly to fetch POI and elevation data.
- Upload your GPX file - Drag and drop or select your route file
- Select POI categories - Choose what you're looking for (water, food, services, etc.)
- Search along route - PitStopper queries OpenStreetMap for POIs within your search radius
- Explore results - View POIs on the map and elevation chart
- Export if needed - Download POIs as a new GPX with waypoints

PitStopper.net integrates with several third-party services to provide its functionality. All connections are made directly from your browser.
POI Data
Point of interest queries now run against our own PostPass server - a PostGIS-backed OpenStreetMap database - for faster, more reliable lookups.

Send to Phone & Share Project
A short-lived relay used only for the optional Send to Phone feature. Your project is encrypted in your browser first, so the relay only ever holds the unreadable, encrypted copy - the decryption key stays with you and never reaches the server. See our Privacy Policy.
A separate, persistent relay used only for the optional Share Project feature. Your project is encrypted in your browser first, the same as Send to Phone - the relay only ever holds the unreadable, encrypted copy until it expires or you revoke it. See our Privacy Policy.

PitStopper.net is a solo project, built and maintained in spare time as a passion project for the cycling and outdoor community. The site is free to use and will remain so.
