
The pros have team cars, musettes, and soigneurs handing up ice-cold bottles. The rest of us have whatever we can find by the side of the road. So we got curious: if you rode the actual 2026 Tour de France route as an ordinary cyclist, where could you top up your bottles and grab a coffee?
We downloaded all 21 stage GPX files, fed each one into PitStopper, and asked a simple question: how many public water taps and cafés sit within 50 metres of the road?
The answer, across roughly 3,300 kilometres of racing: 454 water taps and 289 cafés. But they are spread very, very unevenly.
How we did it
PitStopper draws a 50-metre "corridor" around your GPX track and asks OpenStreetMap what falls inside it. For water we counted public drinking taps (amenity=drinking_water), water points and standpipes; for coffee, anything tagged amenity=cafe. No radius fudging - a strict 50 m either side of the exact race line.
Here is stage 1, the Barcelona circuit, with everything within 50 m of the route lit up:

Sixty-five taps and fifty cafés in a twenty-kilometre city loop. You would struggle to get thirsty. Barcelona is a cyclist's paradise of public fountains - fonts on what feels like every corner - including one on stage 2 literally named la font del ciclista: the cyclist's fountain.
The cities are awash. The countryside is not.
Then the race leaves the coast, and the picture flips completely.

The transitional stages through rural France are where you would run dry. Stage 11 (Vichy to Nevers) has a single public water tap in 161 kilometres. One. Stages 8, 12 and 13 aren't much wetter - a handful of taps each across a full day's ride. Out here, the peloton's bottles come from the team car, and yours had better come from home.
Mountains: plenty of water, precious little coffee
The high stages tell a different story again.

The road to Alpe d'Huez (stage 20) passes 41 water taps but only 5 cafés. Alpine villages keep their old roadside fountains and spring troughs, so water is never far away - but the cols themselves are café deserts. The three big mountain days (stages 18, 19 and 20) all share this shape: drink freely, but carry your own coffee.
What the taps actually look like
An OpenStreetMap "drinking water" point isn't always a modern spout. Many are centuries-old ornamental fountains. This one, the Font del Gat in Barcelona's Montjuïc gardens, sits right on the stage 1 route - a stone grotto that has been quenching thirsts since long before carbon bikes:

We spot-checked a handful of the taps in Street View. Some are unmistakable; plenty of the smaller roadside spouts are impossible to make out from the car - which is exactly why having them mapped and pinned to your route is so useful.
The extremes
- Wettest day: Stage 2, Tarragona to Barcelona - 85 taps and 73 cafés. Catalonia does not want you dehydrated.
- Driest day: Stage 11, Vichy to Nevers - one tap in 161 km. Pack two bottles and a plan.
- The irony award: Stage 16 finishes in Thonon-les-Bains, a stone's throw from Évian - the bottled-water capital of the world - yet its 26 km route has just 3 public taps and zero cafés.
A few caveats
These are OpenStreetMap counts, and OSM is only as complete as its local mappers. Dense, well-mapped cities (Barcelona, Paris) will look richer than sparsely-mapped farmland even where the real difference is smaller. A cafe tag doesn't promise the place is open on the day you ride past, and the strict 50 m corridor deliberately ignores a café that's 60 m off the route. Counts are a snapshot from July 2026.
Still, the shape of it is unmistakable, and it matches every cyclist's lived experience: the start and finish are civilisation, and the middle is you, your bottles, and a lot of beautiful, empty road.

And it barely takes a second
A fair question: how long does all this take to compute? Each stage is a single spatial query. PitStopper buffers the GPX track by 50 metres and PostGIS finds every tap and café inside that corridor in one indexed pass. Timed against the public server:
- A 20 km city circuit (stage 1): 0.7 seconds
- A typical ~180 km stage: 1.2 to 1.7 seconds
- The whole 21-stage Tour: about 25 seconds of query time
The neat part is that the cost tracks the length of the route, not how much it finds. The longest stage (Dole to Belfort, 206 km) returned just seven places but took as long as the busiest (Tarragona to Barcelona, 158 places) - because the work is scanning the corridor, not fetching the handful of results. Doing the same job the old way, with dozens of point-by-point lookups and their timeouts, would take minutes and often stall. One query, about a second, is what makes "check my entire route" practical.
Try it on your own route
None of this needed the Tour de France - it works for any GPX. Load your route into PitStopper, tick Water and Food & Drink, and set the search radius to whatever you'd detour for. It draws the same corridor, finds the same taps and cafés, and you can export the whole lot back to your bike computer as course points. Every long ride deserves a refill plan.
